London’s Alternative Christmas Events

Just because it’s Christmas, it doesn’t mean that the city puts everything on hold for turkey and Christmas pudding. Forget about the carol concerts and the obligatory mince pies and seek out something decidedly different. Escape the ordinary and mundane this year and enjoy some alternative Christmas events taking place in the city this December.

Hogwarts in the Snow

Warner Bros are giving their Harry Potter experience something of a winter makeover. Enter into the magnificent Great Hall this winter and you will find that it is filled with fully decked Christmas trees, dripping with holly boughs and those great long tables will be laden down with delicious Christmas fayre from roast turkey to plum pudding. Visitors will also be able to see the delightful Christmas jumpers handed out by Molly Weasley as well as the party wear of Luna Lovegood. Visitors to the attraction will also discover how to use a little bit of movie magic to turn salt into snow. Hogwarts in the snow is in operation between Tuesday November 16th and Monday January 6th 2014.

Freeze 2013

This year Clapham Common with be home to the Freeze Festival. The common will be totally transformed into a snowy winter sports resort where the new ‘Hail the Rail’ ski and snowboard competition will be held. Visitors can expect to find delicious alpine food stalls and a tailor made shopping village selling everything from ski equipment to chalet holidays. There will also be showings of appropriately themed films and talks and workshops hosted by winter sports athletes and explorers. The après ski has not been forgotten either as there are a number of bars compete with DJ’s as well as several bands playing live, and of course a fabulous funfair. Freeze 2013 runs between November 27th and December 1st.

Wishing You a Very Vintage Christmas

Turn back the clock and enjoy a truly traditional Christmas at London’s Olympic Park Christmas Markets. A Victorian funfair completes the scene, along with a traditional helter skelter slide. You will also find a beer festival here, plenty of mulled wine to warm you up or a warmed spiced cider too. The markets are in place between Friday December 6th and Sunday December 8th.

Christmas Tournament: Disco Dodgeball

What could be more Christmassy than a high action, fast pace game of fancy dress dodgeball? Teams of six will be fighting for the trophy, in full fancy dress to tunes from London’s famous Boogie Nights DJ’s. To make sure the teams keep their disco up to scratch they will be mentored throughout the event by their disco coach Nile Dodgers. The event takes place on Saturday December 7th at the Brixton Recreation Centre.

The 1950’s Couture Christmas Ball

Celebrate in style at the ever so eccentric Museum of Fashion and Textiles. Enjoy a 1950’s makeover to get really into the swing of things and enjoy the authentic music and refreshments at an evening you are not likely to forget. You will also be able to take home a vintage style photograph from the event. The Christmas Ball takes place at the Fashion and Textiles Museum on Thursday December 12th.
