The Mermaid Inn

In the cobbled Mermaid Street, this 15th century building is said to have been a favorite of famous smugglers such as the Hawkhurst Gang. The French destroyed the original building in 1377, but it was rebuilt in 1420.

Ypres Tower

This turreted cliff top citadel was built for defense around 1250 by Peter of Savoy, then sold in 1430 to John de Ypres. Between 1518 and 1865 it was used as a prison. It currently houses the Rye Museum of local history.
