Oxford is a city in south central England. It is known throughout the world as the site of Oxford University, the oldest in England. The town of Oxford was a Roman Catholic shrine more than 1,100 years ago. The University opened about seven hundred years ago. The town grew rapidly and the university became the leading one in England.
Among the oldest colleges of Oxford University are University College (the first college, founded in 1249), Balliol, Merton, St. Edmund Hall, and Exeter. The libraries of Oxford are among the best in the world.
Oxford University has a very important place in British life. Many of Great Britain's intellectual and political leaders have received their training there. In the 19th century it became famous as the center of the Oxford Movement, whose most famous member was Cardinal NEWMAN.
