CANTERBURY TALES
The Canterbury Tales are stories told in the form Of a long poem. They are told by a group of people who are making a pilgrimage, or holy trip, to the shrine of St. Thomas a Becket at Canterbury Cathedral. The Canterbury Tales are important because they are the first great writing in the Middle English language. Chaucer got the idea for the stories when he himself went on a pilgrimage and noticed how many different kinds of people there were in the party. In the poem each pilgrim is described, and then he or she was to tell four stories. The stories are based on tales that have been told in many other languages. Chaucer translated them into English poetry. Although it is not complete, the poem is 17,000 lines long.
