Arundel is a small town known mainly for its famous and spectacular and mighty Arundel Castle seat of the Dukes of Norfolk. Besides being a historic castle going back 1000 years it is also a family home.

This 11^th century castle was rebuilt in Georgian times in Gothic style and the Cathedral is an 1890’s celebration of the Liberation of English Catholicism b the Dukes of Norfolk. Arundel Castle is associated with some of the great families of England such as the Fitzalans and the mighty Howards of Norfolk.

Arundel Castle was chosen as the background scenery for “The Madness of King George” however in the film it represented Windsor Castle.

Arundel Castle
This great castle, ancestral home of the Dukes of Norfolk, dates from the Norman Conquest. Containing a very fine collection of furniture dating from the 16thC and paintings by Van Dyck, Reynolds, Gainsborough etc., Arundel Castle is still a family home reflecting the changes of nearly a thousand years. In 1643, during the Civil War, the original castle was very badly damaged and it was later restored by the 8th, 11th and 15th Dukes in the 18th and 19th centuries. Among the historically famous members of the Howard family are Lord Howard of Effingham who with Drake repelled the Armada; the Earl of Surrey, the Tudor poet and courtier and the 3rd Duke of Norfolk, uncle of Anne Boleyn and Catherine Howard both of whom became wives of
Henry VIII.
